What To Expect

Join us for a weekend of community and self-improvement as we explore the iconic natural landscapes of Joshua Tree and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the desert. Away from the light pollution of big cities, Joshua Tree is the perfect place to observe the night sky including the Milky Way and constellations. For this event, we will have full access to a secluded property just outside of Joshua Tree. The property is outfitted with five vintage airstreams that have been perfectly appointed and updated with modern touches in order to allow you to have a comfortable and refreshing weekend in the desert. We’ll have private access to the entire property including five airstreams with memory foam mattresses, a communal clubhouse, hot tub, cold plunge pool, outdoor bathtubs, and fire pit. The clubhouse will serve as a gathering space where we can come together, eat our meals, and hold open dialogues about photography, wellness, and any other topics that may be of interest. This event will be completely private and we will have sole access to the entire five acres of the property.

The primary goal for this workshop is to bring together a group of like-minded individuals to explore the natural landscapes of the area and experience a weekend of community and creativity. Opportunities to disconnect and step away from the stress of daily life are rare these days. This weekend will be the perfect chance to reset, refresh, and better yourself physically and mentally. We’ll focus on honing the tools at your disposal in order to form a foundation of positive habits centered around mindfulness so that you can reach your highest potential as an individual. This will include a focus on areas including the following: the importance of well-rounded nutrition with examples of meals that can nourish your body and mind, how to live consciously in the present and make healthy choices that will serve yourself now and into the future, fundamentals of meditation and yoga for beginners, how to be more efficient and make the most of your time, how to find ways of staying active that work the best for you, and how to escape from the pressures of daily life and have more energy and less anxiety.

We will be going over a variety photography techniques during this weekend retreat such as the fundamentals of landscape adventure and astrophotography, editing in Lightroom, and gear selection and planning your shots. Thanks to the beautiful night skies in Joshua Tree, we’ll be covering at length everything necessary to capture an amazing photograph of the Milky Way including locating and tracking the the movement of the Milky Way and the moon, planning your shot, and capturing the perfect exposure. We will also be going over timelapsing techniques including the use of a motorized track system that enables your to create incredible timelapse sequences with movement and life. 

This retreat will be a well-rounded experience with equal parts photography, practicing wellness techniques such as yoga and meditation, and eating delicious meals. We’ve had many attendees come with zero prior photography experience and they’ve gone home with fantastic photos. We’ll show you the ropes and teach you everything you need to know in order to take amazing photos from day one. Thanks to our support from Sony, all attendees will have the chance to borrow and try out a variety of Sony camera bodies and lenses from the a6500 to the a7riii! This weekend will be unlike any other workshop we’ve held in the past so if you're up for an adventure, this trip is perfect for you. Refunds & Cancellations

  • This workshop includes a non-refundable $750 deposit. Cancellation requests must be made by email to tiffpenguinworkshops@gmail.com.

  • Cancellation on or before June 21st, 2019: 100% refund less non-refundable deposit fees.

  • Cancellation after June 21st, 2019: This close to the workshop date, we are no longer able to offer refunds. If you are able to find someone to fill your space, we can refund your fees less the non-refundable deposit.

  • In the highly unlikely event a workshop is cancelled, those enrolled will be immediately notified and refunded all payment received in full, including any deposits.


Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book my flights for?

For the trip, you will have the option of either flying into John Wayne Airport (SNA) or meeting us in the Orange County area where we will shuttle all attendees to the property in Joshua Tree. We will plan on meeting at John Wayne Airport at around 1pm on Friday, August 2nd. From there, it is about a two hour drive to Joshua Tree. Try to arrive as close to or earlier than the stated meeting time because the group will be waiting at the airport until the last person arrives. For your departure on August 5th, the ideal flight time is 3pm or later. You should not depart any earlier than 3pm because will be traveling back to Orange County from Joshua Tree that morning so it won't be possible to make it to the airport in time for any flights earlier than that. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the best flights to book!

How physically fit do I need to be? Do I need to be an experienced hiker?

There will be very little hiking on this workshop. There will be several short walks on relatively flat ground. This trip is suitable for individuals of all fitness levels! Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Do I need a DSLR camera to attend this workshop?

No! First and foremost, this workshop is about experiencing a weekend of learning and self-discovery and experiencing the natural landscapes of Joshua Tree with a group of like-minded individuals. If that sounds appealing, then we’d love for you to join us! We’ve had many attendees come with zero photography experience in the past and they all went home with gorgeous photos. We normally have a great mix of all different skill levels on our workshops. During the workshop, we will be providing instruction a variety of photography techniques including basic composition and editing, astrophotography, and timelapsing. However, this workshop in particular is about much more than just photography. Along the way, we’ll definitely be taking photos of the property and the surrounding areas of Joshua Tree so having a camera is definitely a plus, but this can be anything from your smartphone to a top of the line DSLR. There will also be opportunities to borrow Sony camera gear for use during the trip so no worries if you don’t have a camera! We’ll have everything from the a6500 to the a7riii for you to check out and use in the field!

What will the accommodations be like?

The property has five vintage airstreams which each sleep 2 people. Therefore, all attendees will be sharing a bed with one other attendee. If there’s anyone you’d like to attend the workshop with, we can ensure that you will be able to room with the person of your choosing. If you plan to attend the workshop by yourself, you will be paired up with a member of the same sex that we think will be the best fit. Each airstream features a Casper memory foam mattress, A/C unit, space heater, fans, and electricity. The airstreams themselves do not have running water or bathrooms. The communal clubhouse features a full bathroom with toilet, shower, and hot water, a full indoor/outdoor kitchen, barbecue, fire pit, and refrigerator. There’s an additional standalone full bathroom and shower on the property as well. There is also a private outdoor shower available for your use if you’d like!

What will the weather be like?

It’s a relative certainty that we’ll experience hot days and sunny skies during our time in Joshua Tree. Therefore, it’s very important to keep that in mind when planning what to pack. It can sometimes get slightly chilly in the evening so it’s probably still a good idea to bring a sweater. In the unlikely event that the weather or other conditions preclude us from visiting certain areas of the park, there are many alternative places to explore and we will have a full lineup of activities back at our home base.

What are the transportation details?

We will be providing transportation from John Wayne Airport (SNA). If obtaining a flight to SNA is difficult from the location you’re flying from, let us know and we can figure out an alternative solution. We can also offer a carpool service to anyone who would like to meet in the Orange County area. We will set a dedicated meeting point where attendees can safely park their cars for the weekend and we will provide transportation to the event site. If you’re from the Los Angeles area and you’d like to drive yourself to the event location, that’s completely fine as well. Once the workshop gets closer, we’ll provide you with directions to the event site.
